Blue Wood Aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium, formerly Aster cordifolius) brings a soft cloud of pale blue to lavender flowers to the garden as summer gives way to fall. Small daisy-like blooms with yellow centers appear in loose sprays above branching stems, creating a light, airy display that welcomes late-season bees and butterflies. Its toothed, heart-shaped lower leaves give this native perennial another common name: heart-leaved aster.
Native to eastern and central North America, blue wood aster is a lovely choice for woodland edges, naturalized plantings, and partially shaded pollinator gardens. Let it rise among ferns and sedges for a gentle contrast of flowers and foliage.
- Mature Size: Up to approximately 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide
- Light: Partial shade
- Bloom Time: Late summer into fall
- Flowers: Small pale blue to lavender daisies with yellow centers that may deepen to red with age
- Growth Habit: Upright, loosely branching herbaceous perennial
Plant in well-drained soil in a partially shaded location. Water regularly while roots become established; established plants tolerate a range of moist to dry conditions. Pinch stems back earlier in the growing season for a bushier habit, and provide support if taller stems lean. Allow good airflow around plants. It can self-seed freely, so remove spent flower heads if you prefer to limit seedlings.
