New York Aster (Symphyotrichum novi-belgii, formerly Aster novi-belgii) brings a lively finish to the growing season with clouds of daisy-like flowers above upright, branching stems. Typically violet-purple with golden-yellow centers, its blooms add a soft sweep of color as summer turns to fall and draw visiting bees and butterflies. Pair it with goldenrod and ornamental grasses for a richly textured autumn border.
A native perennial from eastern North America, New York aster is well suited to sunny, moist garden settings. Unlike the compact ‘Wood’s’ selections, the species develops a taller, airy presence.
- Mature Size: Approximately 3–5 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide
- Light: Full sun to partial shade; best flowering in sun
- Bloom Time: Late summer into fall
- Flowers: Typically violet-purple daisies with yellow centers; color can vary
- Growth Habit: Upright, branching herbaceous perennial
- Available Size: 1 Gallon
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water regularly while roots become established. Continue watering during dry spells, especially in sunny locations. Allow good airflow around the foliage to help reduce powdery mildew, and give its taller stems room among supporting companion plants.
