Chinquapin Oak (Quercus muehlenbergii)

The Chinquapin Oak is one of the most elegant and underappreciated native oaks in the landscape. Its distinctive toothed leaves — reminiscent of the chinquapin shrub it's named for — emerge with a soft bronze sheen in spring, mature to a rich glossy green in summer, and turn warm shades of yellow, orange, and brown in fall. Adaptable, long-lived, and deeply valuable to wildlife, this is a tree that rewards the patient gardener with decades of beauty and ecological richness.

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade; best growth and form in full sun
  • Soil: Adaptable; notably tolerant of alkaline, rocky, and dry soils — one of the few oaks that thrives in limestone-based soils
  • Water: Low to moderate once established; drought-tolerant
  • Maintenance: Low — a naturally self-sufficient tree; prune in late winter while dormant

Landscape Uses

An excellent specimen and shade tree for a wide range of landscape settings, including challenging sites with thin, rocky, or alkaline soils where other oaks struggle. Its large, sweet acorns are among the most palatable of any native oak and are eagerly sought by deer, wild turkey, squirrels, and wood ducks. Like all oaks, it supports a rich community of native caterpillars and insects, making it one of the most ecologically valuable trees you can plant. A true legacy tree for generations.

Plant arrives in a 7-gallon container at 5–7 ft in height, ready to transplant into your landscape.
