Clethra alnifolia 'Hummingbird'

Clethra alnifolia ‘Hummingbird’, also known as summersweet, brings sweet fragrance and soft white blooms to the summer garden. Upright flower spikes rise above rich green foliage, inviting bees and butterflies to stop by. Plant it near a patio or walkway to enjoy the scent, or tuck it into a woodland border where its compact, rounded shape adds structure. In autumn, the leaves turn warm yellow for a final splash of color.

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Water regularly while roots become established and during dry spells; this shrub prefers consistent moisture. Its spreading habit may produce suckers over time, which can be removed to maintain a defined clump. If shaping is needed, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
